River Series Report from Philip Chambers.
I think we can report that overall the river series was a success in terms of enjoyment, satisfaction and fair sailing although sometimes attendances could have been improved on.
Events were held at London Corinthian (12), Henley (7), South Bank (19), Hampton (18) and Twickenham (6). The best showings being at South Bank and Hampton.
The river series seeded trophy, a beautiful wooden replica of an Enterprise, was won by Chris Rowsell from Lensbury Sailing Club. Chris did all the river events.
The non seeded trophy, a handsome silver cup, was won by Alan Munro – Favre from Southbank Sailing Club. Also at the final held at Twickenham Yacht Club the unique Teapot Trophy was awarded to Sara Bennet from Southbank for her efforts on behalf of the Enterprise Association South East Area. We hope to present the Trying Traveller Trophy to Chris Crossland at our A.G.M. he is truly a deserving winner.
It would be encouraging if host clubs could get their home fleets out on the water as this seems the best way to boost numbers. Also regular home club sailing in Enterprises is probably the best way to swell our numbers.
I would like to encourage Lensbury and Ariel to rejoin our river series, perhaps as a joint meeting and Chris Rowsell is assisting in this endeavour.
The river series final will again be held at the last river event of the year.
All the trophies which were transferred to me and have been recovered by me, except one, have been presented or will be presented. The remaining one is an attractive silver tray Geoff Foster Crews Trophy. We will find a winner for this next year.
I have the sum of £35 held for the above series.
Report on 2010 Blue Jib Series
In 2010, the Blue Jib series comprised the same 4 events as in the previous year, namely Bewl Valley (15th May), Weir Wood (18th July), Chipstead (5th September) and Papercourt (3rd October). All four events were blessed with wind and excellent organisation, resulting in very enjoyable sailing. Papercourt probably provided the most challenging conditions, with a strong, gusty wind which seemed to change direction every few seconds (perhaps this is normal?)
Leading up to the final event, David Beaney had two wins (Bewl and Weir Wood) and Peter/Liss Bennett one (Chipstead). As only the best two results counted, there was the prospect of the Blue Jib trophy being wrested from the Beaney mantelpiece, where is has resided for more years than most of us care to remember, but only if Peter and Liss could win the event, giving them equal points and the trophy on a tie break. Sadly, it was never put to the test, as Peter and Liss did not compete at Papercourt, so David/Alex won the trophy again, although they were beaten into second place at Papercourt by Andy and Nigel Bird, a particularly impressive performance given the challenging conditions. Third place overall was Nick Bush from Weir Wood, sailing with various young ladies.
A total of 33 different crews sailed at least one event, 2 fewer than last year. 10 crews sailed two events and qualified, 1 more than last year. Best turnout was at Chipstead, with 14 entries (8 home, 6 visitors), followed by Weir Wood with 13 entries (5 home, 8 visitors).

Thames Valley Bowl Report 2010
The South East mini series covers the clubs to the South East of London plus Papercourt. The River Series covers the 5 river events. The Thames Valley Bowl covers all clubs with the exception of the three clubs south east of London
80 boats sailed in at least one meeting in the Thames Valley Bowl this year. The largest turnout (20 boats) was for the tideway race (down to the houses and parliament and back) which was again run by Southbank. Typical turnouts were however 11 boats. To qualify for the Thames Valley Bowl you had to count your best 4 results. Those clubs beating the average turnout generally achieved this through a strong turnout from their home club fleet and there were only 5 boats travelling beyond their home club to three of more events.
David Beaney won the Thames Valley Bowl again with a strong set of results. Chris Rowsell from Lensbury won the B division trophy by diligently attending 6 open meetings and scoring consistently to come 2nd overall in the Bowl. Looking further down the list there were many people who won individual open meetings, but were put off by the cold and windy weather for the final event so having sailed only 3 events they had to add a 22 to their score for a DNC.
While winning is good, supporting other clubs open meetings is the essence of the future for our series. So this year the ‘Trying Traveller’ trophy goes to Chris Crossland of London Corinthian who attended 4 out of the 5 river series events and kept smiling despite testing the improved water quality of the Thames at both Southbank and Hampton.
SE Championships, Weir Wood SC
by Dick Lankester
The S.E. Championships this year were held at Weir Wood SC on 18th July. The event was also the second round of the Blue Jib series.
The gales which swept the British Isles earlier in the week had fortunately moderated a couple of days before the event and the 8 visiting crews and 5 home crews arrived to find a perfect F3 south west breeze blowing down the reservoir.
In the first race Keith and Katie Tyler (Hunts SC) rounded in the lead closely followed by Pete/Alicia Bennett (Salcombe YC) and David/Alex Beaney (Castaways SC). Down the reaches Bennetts moved into the lead followed by the Beaney’s. The Beaney’s moved into the lead and briefly Nick Bush/Fiona Harrington (Weir Wood SC) took 2nd place, but the Bennetts regained 2nd on the finishing line. Further down the fleet, the gusty and shifty wind caught out several crews who were observed taking early swims, the Tylers recovering well from a swim to regain 4th place.
The second race saw a similar pattern with the Bennetts taking an early lead, but the Beaney’s reeling them in and overtaking them before the finish, with Nick Bush in 3rd and David/Dominic Manson (Bewl Valley SC) in 4th place.
When crews took to the water after lunch, the wind had increased to F4 with white horses greeting competitors as they sailed to the race course. This proved too much for Dick Lankester/John Chisnall (Weir Wood SC) who managed to fill their boat with water without quite capsizing a minute before the start of the third race, effectively compromising their chances . Up at the front, the Bennetts took their first win of the day from the Beaneys, with the Mansons sailing well to take third place and the Tylers 4th place.
By the time the fourth and final race started, the wind had moderated slightly. The Bennetts again sailed into an early lead. The Beaneys had their work cut out after an indifferent start but eventually moved through to lead on the final lap and posted their third win of the day and retained the South East Area Championships and the Bennetts their third second place. The Mansons and the Tylers finished third and fourth respectively.
Everyone agreed it had been an enjoyable and energetic day’s sailing. It was particularly encouraging to see no less than 5 crew members under the age of 18.

Thames Valley Bowl, Frensham Pond SC
by Dick Lankester
On 11th April Frensham gave its best and a feeling of déjà vu with a repeat of last year’s conditions with a force 4 north-easterly backing and increasing 5, gusting force 7 which made for very exciting sailing, especially as we were sharing the day with a fleet of Larks. Peter Jackson and Julie Bennett well and truly showed us the way it should be done by getting a good start and clearly winning all 3 races to take the Packard Cup. Valiant efforts by home sailors Colin Gilbert and Ian Johnson gave them 2nd and 3rd in the first race but Colin’s tactic of resting up and entering the 3rd race was thwarted by a capsize. More home sailors tried to challenge in the second, Roger Carter and Nick Carr taking 2nd and 3rd. The conditions in the 3rd race proved too much for some, run back-to-back by our race officer Tim Hemsley, but we got off to a clean start after a general recall of the Larks. It was then the turn of visitors Dick and Jo Lankester to take 2nd, their consistency awarded with a prize and a placing towards the Thames Valley Bowl.
Overall it was a great day if exhausting, which may explain why the tea table emptied very quickly, and it was improved by the presence of Bob and Paula Southworth flying the flag, or should I say orange stickers, for the Enterprise Association.

Enterprise Open at Silver Wing S C - 21 March 2010
by Peter Phillips
Thirteen boats, including 4 visitors from as far away as Melton Mowbray, contested the first South Eastern Area Enterprise open meeting of the season at Silver Wing SC.
A variable breeze, ranging from a respectable force 3 to nothing, presented race officers Pete Smith and Pete Bennett with a fair challenge, but they were able to set a good course, with the fleet getting cleanly away on the first start. Pete Jackson led round the first mark, pursued by Chris and Laura Nokes. Roger Bennett and Dave Beaney were able to catch up and pass the second placed boat, and then followed a good tussle between themselves. Adam Wickenden was able however to pass them on the last lap to secure second, with Beaney third.

The second race saw slightly more wind. Pete Jackson again made the first mark in the lead. A big lift from the left hand side of the course saw Roger Bennett and Paul Playle, hotly pursued by Peter and Oliver Phillips, storm past the fleet to round in second and third places respectively. Beaney and Wickenden were however able to regain their position during the race, finishing second and third respectively with Roger Bennett in fourth.

Race three was started immediately after race two in a dying wind. Wickenden led round the first mark, followed by Jackson and Phil Chambers. Jackson retired, as the wind died to nothing, with two wins he did not need to finish. With the wind now gone and four boats retired, the race officer sensibly shortened course to less than a lap, although a slight puff did allow Roger Bennett to overtake Phil Chambers to gain third place.

2010 Battle of the Classes Pursuit at the Boat Show
The Battle of the Classes Pursuit Race was held on Sunday 17th January 2010, at the London Boat Show, ExCeL, on the Royal Victorian Dock. It was sponsored by 'British Sailing'. Sailors of 51 boats were welcomed by blue sky's, a reasonable temperature, a gentle South Westerly force 2 to 3, with the occasional extra puff, coming over the top of the Dome and sun sparkling off the massive dock.
Edwin Buckley and his team from The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Burnham ran the race and Richard Parsloe commentated in his usual irreverent manner.
Enterprise teams manoeuvre before their start
Our specially selected Enterprise team of David Beaney and his son Alex and Phil Kirk and Sarah Gregson hit the start line right on the hooter with the GP14 and a Topper Xenon at 1219. At the first windward mark, well within view, and to the west, of the overhead bridge, David and Alex just had the edge on Phil and Sarah, reversing last years order. However this is more of a team race so tactics against each other were out. Both worked their way through the fleet and fought off most other faster classes with David and Alex increasing their lead over Phill and Sarah to a dozen boat lengths or so. However the, almost brand new, Graduate proved impossible to catch and the Firefly gave David and Alex a persistent challenge. The race lasting 103 minutes was hotly but very fairly contested and was a joy to watch from the bridge.
Close racing as both our boats round a mark. David and Alex pass under the bridge
Build up to the prize giving, held inside ExCeL, was heightened by the most amazing and energetic dance and singing routine from a group of young people, dressed in various sailing attire, from a dance college, topped by a young woman who added a new dimension to 'mast dancing' (fully clothed), which looked extremely dangerous.
Results 1st Graduate, Steve Cockerill and a young Harry Kennedy, 2nd Albacore, 3rd Finn, 4th Streaker, 5th Firefly, 6th Solo, 7th Enterprise (David and Alex) Phil and Sarah were 11th and a Mirror won the Juniors.
Sarah and Phil pass under the bridge. Third overall - Our top teams Sarah Gragson, Phil Kirk and David and Alex Beaney
Team awards 1st Albacore, 2nd Solo, 3rd Enterprise, 4th Finn.
Once again well done the Enterprise Team because you have projected our class, in a positive and fair sailing way, to probably the largest live audience of dinghy racing in the world bar the Olympics.
