Emberton Park Sailing Club Open - 10 October 2010
By Paul Young
This joint Midland and Eastern area event, the fourteenth and final in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Emberton Park Sailing Club on Sunday 10th October. The ten boat fleet which included five visitors from as far away as South Caernarvonshire YC, Staunton Harold SC, Tamworth SC, Midland SC and Redditch SC were greeted by a warm sunny day with a light to moderate shifty Easterly wind.
The first race started from a port biased line saw Alan Johnson and Paula Fisher (SCYC) round the windward mark first from Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) with Luke and Daniel Fisher (Emberton Park SC) and Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC) close behind. At the second mark Paul Young and Megan Ward (Midland SC) passed both Mike and Christine and Nigel and Diana to gain third but this was very short lived as they were soon overtaken again on the next downwind leg. Alan and Paula continued to build up their lead from Luke and Daniel, Nigel and Diana and Mike and Christine on the next few laps. On the last lap Nigel and Diana exchanged places with Luke and Daniel to gain second position. These places were then held to the finish.
The second race started after an excellent lunch on the same course. This time Nigel and Diana led at the first mark from Mike and Christine with Paul and Megan third. On the next leg Luke and Daniel and also Alan and Paula overtook the three leading boats to windward to gain first and second. Luke and Daniel now built up a lead which they held to the finish, behind Nigel and Diana who had held second place for quite a long time were overtaken by Alan and Paula. Later Alan and Paula, Nigel and Diana and Mike and Christine exchanged places several times. At the finish Luke and Daniel were first followed by Alan and Paula, Nigel and Diana and Mike and Christine. This meant the meeting was still wide open with three possible winners.
The third race sailed on a slightly different course saw Nigel and Diana make a perfect port tack start to lead at the first mark from Alan and Paula with the positions behind these being hotly contested. Alan and Paula eventually reeled in Nigel and Diana after about forty minutes to take the lead, which they held to the finish, second was Nigel and Diana, with Mike and Christine third.

Redditch Sailing Club Open Meeting - Report by Paul Young and Megan Ward
This was the twelfth event in the Midland Area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails.
There were 9 boats including visitors from Midland, Tamworth, Emberton Park and Avon sailing clubs. It was an inauspicious, damp grey day. The wind was light and very variable but increased through the day with some strong gusts in the last race.
The race officer set courses in difficult conditions but managed to provide us with three different and interesting courses.

Close racing in light winds for the Redditch SC Open
The conditions in race one were so variable that places changed regularly throughout. By the second half of race 1 the competition was between Mike Cossey/Christine Barron, Dave Jackson/Gus Noakes, Antony Lynall/Simon Lynall and Greg Croydon/Gail Ranford. However, on the very last lap Paul Young/Megan Ward surprised everybody and snatched the lead within moments of the finish being sounded and finished in first place. Antony Lynall/Simon Lynall took second place with Mike Cossey/Christine Barron coming third.
The second race was back to back with the first but a new course was set to make the best of the wind conditions. The upwind leg was made additionally demanding by sharing a narrow stretch of water with fishermen, and returning downwind boats. Again places changed regularly although we were pleased to avoid the stretch of dead water in front of the club house which had featured in race 1. A close fight took place between Mike Cossey/Christine Barron and Dave Jackson/Gus Noakes for first place but ultimately Mike was able to seize the lead and cross the line well ahead. Dave Jackson/Gus Noakes came second. Paul Young/Megan Ward managed to move up the fleet from a mid position to take third place in the last lap.

Paul Young and Megan Ward lead Mike Cossey and Christine Barron
After a most enjoyable lunch provided by the ladies of the galley a new course was set for the final race. The tension was high as results so far meant that four boats were potentially fighting for first place. The race officer set a tight start line to keep us on our toes. Martin Bottomley/Kate Brazier and Mike Cossey/Christine Barron both had very good starts. However, by the windward mark Mike Cossey/Christine Barron were in the lead. Some very close racing followed with several place changes and some crowded mark roundings. Paul/Megan held the lead briefly. However, subsequently the lead was taken by Mike/Christine, Greg/Gail and Dave/Gus during the race. The wind built up throughout the race and brought some exciting gusts which helped Paul/Megan to take back the lead on the beat which they held to the finish. Second was Mike/Christine and third was Greg/Gail.

Ogston Sailing Club Open Meeting - Report by Martin Bradley
On 18th July Osgton hosted a combined North East and Speed Sails sponsored Midland Double Chine series Enterprise Open.
The Enterprise fleet at Oston has been going from strength to strength in recent years with club class races becoming fiercely competitive affairs. Although the visitor turnout was disappointing 13 Ents still enjoyed high quality competition in a F4-5 south westerly with occasional 30mph gusts. Race officer Nick McCleod set some challenging courses to make the most of the conditions - plenty of whooping reaches and hairy gybes
The first race saw a fiercely contested battle between the father and daughter pairing of Martin and Abigail Honnor, Matt Rawson and Kathryn Bradley, and the husband and wife team of Martin and Jackie Bradley. After frequent exchanges of the lead Martin and Jackie squeezed past on the final run of the course planing white knuckled and by the lee.
After the much needed lunch break conditions remained blustery and the racing as tight as ever. The beat was difficult to read and never consistent from one lap to the next. Eventually, however, it was Martin and Abigail who won out in a closely fought battle with Matt and Kathryn.
The final race saw a big wind shift at the start making it difficult to lay the pin end. The two Martins came out well and after Martin H hit the windward mark the Bradleys found themselves with a nice cushion. However they were eventually overhauled, by nearly everyone, and retired with a frayed jib sheet and frayed nerves! Eventually Martin and Abigail pulled out a comfortable lead from Matt and Kathryn who were being hard pressed by Andy and Victoria Gomm with Noel Wilson and Paula Gordon also well in the hunt.
Ogston boats occupied the first 5 slots with Pete Cossey and Christine Barron the leading visitors in 6th. Youngest competitor was George Graham sailing with dad Paul. He was tacking in fine style and showed a lot of promise.
Congratulations to Martin and Abigail on a hard fought win.

Midland Sailing Club Open Meeting – report by Paul Young, photographs Siobhan Pearson
This event the tenth in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Midland SC on Sunday 4th July.
A fleet of nine boats including four visitors from Redditch, Bartley Shustoke and Emberton Park Sailing clubs were welcomed by a strong and gusty south westerly wind, which provided much excitement and several capsizes.
Race one started in a force five gusting six wind from a port biased line, and saw the fleet get away well. Jon Woodward and Fiona Rattigan (Bartley/Etherow) lead from the start line only to be passed by Martin Weatherstone and Karen Jewkes (Midland SC) up the beat, who never looked back and kept extending their lead to the finish. Jon and Fiona were second whilst local youngsters Chris Winters and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) sailed extremely well to finish third ahead of Paul Young and Megan Ward (Midland SC) in fourth.

Martin Weatherstone and Karen Jewkes
Race two sailed on a new course after an excellent lunch and saw a very port biased line. Both Chris and Iain and Martin and Karen were early to the port end of the line forcing Martin and Karen to tack onto port as Jon was crossing the line to starboard, the resulting collision left Jon and Fiona carrying damage but still able to race and Martin and Karen taking a penalty. Jon and Fiona rounded the windward mark first with Paul and Megan second and Martin Bottomley and Ray Ball (Emberton Park) third. Paul and Megan capsized at the following gybe mark allowing Martin and Ray through. Later Paul and Megan passed Martin and Ray on the beat but Martin and Ray and also Chris and Iain passed Paul and Megan at the second windward mark. On the run, positions stayed the same, however on the next beat Paul and Megan passed both Martin and Ray and Chris and Iain to regain third place. Martin and Ray were fourth and Chris and Iain fifth. Chris and Iain sailed a brilliant last beat to snatch fourth place on the finish line.

Jon Woodward and Fiona Rattigan
The third race saw a depleted fleet of five boats racing on the same course with some exciting flat out planing. Martin and Karen led at the first mark from Chris and Iain with Paul and Megan in third. Chris and Iain planed past Martin and Karen on a very fast reach, however an unfortunate mistake at the leeward mark and the resulting capsize allowed Martin and Karen to retake the lead.
Paul Young and Megan Ward
Paul and Megan then took the lead at the following windward mark, rounding inside Martin and Karen and increased this on the following run. Martin and Karen pulled past Paul and Megan on the following beat to regain the lead. Later Martin Bottomley fell out of his boat on the beat allowing Chris and Iain to catch up. At the finish Martin and Karen won from a fast closing Paul and Megan in second with Martin and Ray in third and Chris and Iain fourth.

Midland Area Champs at Notts County Sailing Club - By Paul Young
This joint Midland / North East event was the ninth in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails and was held at Notts County SC over the weekend 26th/27th June.
The twenty five boat fleet included visitors from Ogston, Rotherham, Staunton Harold, Tamworth, Shustoke, Burghfield, Northampton, Bartley, Midland, Emberton Park, and Ripon sailing clubs who enjoyed a very hot sunny day with a light to moderate Easterly wind.
The shifty wind challenged the race officer Nadia Lincoln and competitors alike with the wind swinging thirty degrees left and right.
The first race saw Martin and Abigail Honner (Ogston SC) starting at the pin end round the windward mark first followed closely by Steve Graham and Chris Blundell (Northampton SC) and Matt Rawson and Jess Law (Ogston SC). The leading bunch had close completion among themselves with Martin and Abigail squeezing first place, Matt and Jess were second with Steve and Chris third.
The second race sailed back to back saw Jon Woodward and Graham Sheard (Bartley/NCSC) round the windward mark first following a shifty first beat, close behind was Russell Short and Kate Fry (Rotherham SC) with Martin and Abigail third hitting the mark spinning away. Locals Matt Potter and Nicola Ogden (Notts County SC) rounded fifth and maintained this position. Russell and Kate and Barry Moss and Julie Moore sailed well to finish second and third.
The third race sailed on a new course, following a short break saw the black flag come out for the first time following the majority of the fleet over the line and a general recall. At the second attempt three boats were black flagged. Martin and Abigail rounded the windward mark first from Russell and Kate clear from Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC). After some close racing throughout the fleet the race finished in that order.

Prize winners at Notts County - Nigel and Diana Pepperdine, Abigail and Martin Honnor, and Kate Fry and Russell Short - photograph Notts County SC
The fourth race sailed back to back saw Nigel and Diana lead round the first mark with Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) second who sailed a very strong race maintaining their second place throughout. The race was decided on the second to last leg Nigel and Diana got the best breeze and pulled away finishing first from Mike and Christine second and Martin and Abigail third.
Saturday evening saw the fleet enjoying an excellent roast dinner, a band and the hospitality provided by team at Notts County SC.
Sunday dawned hot sunny and windless. After a two hour postponement to allow the wind to materialise, racing was abandoned for the day to allow the fleet to watch the England/Germany world cup football match.
Winning helm Martin Honner thanked everyone at Notts County for a great weekend and Paintcraft for sponsoring some of the prizes.

Rudyard Lake Sailing Club Open - By Steve Blackburn - Photographs © Rudyard Lake Sailing Club
As we arrived at Rudyard Lake SC we were met with 17 Enterprises and 17 Albacore’s who had traveled from all corners of England. The Albacore’s were also enjoying an Open Meeting.
This was a joint open meeting with the the North West Top Helm Series & Midland Double Chine series, and was sponsored by Speed Sails.
The sun was shining and the wind was building through out the day to a force 2 – 4. Perfect sailing conditions for all standards. Phil Wilson from Ogston was sailing his newly refurbished boat 472 and finished ninth overall, a great achievement.
Race one soon approached as we started 5 minutes before the Albacore’s. Tony Woods and Charlie Berry (Etherow) soon create a lead up the first beat. Jonathon Woodward and Alex Halliwell (Bartley) were not far behind Tony. In third place was Steve Blackburn and Royston Taggart (WLYC / Pilkington). In forth was Ian & Fiona Friswell (Rugby & Daventry) Tony was put under great pressure from Jonathon but held his nerve to finish first. With all the positions remained the same for the end of the race.
Race two soon came as we sailed back to back. Again Tony sailed Well and soon established a lead. Martin & Laurence Davies (Rugby & Daventry) was a little behind in second with Steve & Royston in third. Through out the race Tony, Martin and Steve exchanged places on the downwind legs. Eventually on the last beat Tony and Martin had an altercation with Martin having a penalty 720. Tony went on to win, Steve came in second and Martin in third.
After lun
ch which was a great spread of Jacket potatoes, Sausage, Ham, Cheese, salad and more. The dessert was superb with apple pie and Cream and was finished with a cup of tea.
Again we set sail for the final race. The wind was nice a steady, the course with a good long beat nearly the whole length of the lake with runs and reaches. Tony Woods didn’t sail due to winning the event. Second and third had not been decided so still plenty to sail for. Again Jonathon and Steve sailed well up the first beat to round the buoy in first in second.
Jonathon and Steve had a great battle through out the race with Jonathon finishing in first and Steve in Second. The next pack was three boats, Martin & Laurence, Karen Morris and Lisa Woods (Etherow) and Ian Friswell. Eventually on the last beat Martin came through to finish third with Karen pulling through the fleet for forth and Ian in fifth.
Another great event from Rudyard Lake Sailing Club, we can’t wait for next year!
Sutton Sailing Club Open Meeting
This event the seventh in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Sutton SC on Saturday 19th June.
The ten boat fleet included visitors from Tamworth, Hollowell, Midland, and Emberton Park Sailing clubs who enjoyed a warm sunny day with a moderate northerly wind.
The first race saw Martin Bottomley and Kate Brazier (Emberton Park SC) get a excellent start and lead the first mark, closely followed by youngsters James Hill and Alexander Hughes (Sutton SC) and Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC). Martin and Kate continued to hold the lead for the first two laps with the other boats changing places constantly. James and Alexander then took the lead on the beat closely followed by Mike and Christine, with Martin and Kate dropping to third. Mike and Christine and James and Alexander then battled constantly for the rest of the race swopping positions several times. At the finish James and Alexander won with Mike and Christine second and Martin and Kate third.
After an excellent lunch the second race started on the same course this time Mike and Christine were first at the windward mark followed closely by Russell Brayshaw and Nicola Wilkinson (Hollowell SC) ,Martin and Kate and Paul Young and Nancy Gudgeon (Midland SC) . Positions were exchanged on the next few laps, later it settled down with Mike and Christine leading from Paul and Nancy in second but with third place changing often. At the finish Mike and Christine won by a few boat lengths from Paul and Nancy with Russell and Nicola third and James and Alexander fourth. This left the event wide open with three boats capable of winning overall.

The third race would decide the overall places was keenly contested. The first mark was a repeat of the second race with Mike and Christine rounding first from Russell and Nicola, Martin and Kate and Paul and Nancy. Mike and Christine soon built a useful lead leaving an intense battle for second place involving four to five boats with positions hard to get but easy to lose. Paul and Nancy got in Martin and Kate`s way at a windward mark and had to do a 720 turn allowing some boats past. Later Paul and Nancy recovered to gain second place again until an unfortunate capsize by the sea cadet guard ship allowed several boats past. James and Alexander and Russell and Nicola then battled for second place with James and Alexander breaking clear. At the finish Mike and Christine won this race easily to win the event, with James and Alexander`s second giving them second overall. Russell and Nicola were third with Martin and Kate fourth a couple of boat lengths ahead of Paul and Nancy.
Winning helm Mike Cossey thanked everyone at Sutton SC a great days racing.

Tamworth Sailing Club Open Meeting - 22 May 2010, By Paul Young and Megan Ward
This event the sixth in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Tamworth SC on Saturday 22nd May. The nine boat fleet included visitors from Rugby and Daventry, Midland and Redditch Sailing Clubs who enjoyed a hot sunny day with light and variable breeze.
The first race got underway after a short postponement while the race officer reset the course. The start line was heavily port biased and busy by the committee boat. Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) made a good start and was first to the windward mark, followed by Paul Young and Megan Ward (Midland SC) and then Pete Rotherham jnr and M Coombs (Tamworth SC). The next leg was very slow as the wind dropped, Ian and Fiona Friswell (Rugby and Daventry SC) and Alan Roper and Hugh Nethercot (Tamworth SC) made best use of the conditions and soon pulled up to second and third places. Positions were exchanged over the first lap with Mike and Christine keeping the lead, and Ian and Fiona second and Alan and Hugh third. Later there was a battle between Mike and Christine and Ian and Fiona with Ian and Fiona finally grasping the lead on the final beat, leaving Mike and Christine second and Alan and Hugh third.
The second race followed an excellent ploughman’s lunch was started on a new course. Paul and Megan made an excellent start however it was Ian and Fiona who rounded the windward mark first followed by Mike and Christine and then Paul and Megan. Alan and Hugh soon caught up on a following leg. On the next few laps places exchanged frequently with Ian and Fiona and Mike and Christine battling for first and second places and Alan and Hugh and Paul and Megan battling for third and fourth. Mike and Christine started the last leg in the lead and held on to win with Ian and Fiona second, Paul and Megan third and Alan and Hugh fourth. This left the meeting nicely balanced with exciting third race needed to determine the winner.
The third race saw Ian and Fiona lead at a congested first mark from Mike and Christine whilst Paul and Megan slightly misjudged their port tack approach and found them with nowhere to go, allowing several boats to overtake. However Paul and Megan soon pulled through to fourth behind Alan and Hugh. Ian and Fiona and Mike and Christine again battled for the lead whilst Paul and Megan passed Alan and Hugh on the leg in front of the clubhouse to gain third place. Starting the last leg Ian and Fiona had the lead which they held to the finish. Second were Mike and Christine with a rapid closing Paul and Megan third.
Winning helm Ian Friswell thanked everyone at Tamworth SC for an excellent day's racing.

Barnt Green Sailing Club Open - 16 May 2010, By Paul Young
This joint Midland / Severnside event the fifth in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Barnt Green Sailing Club on Sunday 16th May.
The fourteen boat fleet included eight visitors from Frampton, Bartley, Shustoke, Rugby, Tamworth, Midland, and West Lancs. YC and Emberton Park sailing clubs, who enjoyed a day of sunshine with a very unstable wind.
In the first race Barry Moss and Dennis Swain (Shustoke SC) led at the windward mark followed Phil and Sarah Kirk (Frampton SC) and Jon Woodward and Julie Moore (Bartley SC). Phil and Sarah and Jon and Julie then sailed over Barry and Dennis in increasing pressure and took the lead. Phil and Sarah fended off the following two boats and slowly built a commanding lead. At the finish it was Phil and Sarah first, Jon and Julie second and Charles Adams and Olie Hiliker (West Lancs YC) third. Barry and Dennis finished fourth.

The second race saw the fleet get away cleanly from the port biased line with several boats quickly able to tack onto port and escape from the pack. Barry and Dennis led followed by Phil and Sarah with Jon and Julie hot on their heels. On the second lap the leaders sailed into a dramatic gusting header leaving the poled out jibs aback. Jon and Julie were the quickest to recover and shot into the lead, whilst Barry and Dennis dropped to third. On a latter beat the fleet spilt and Barry and Dennis moved up to second and with Jon and Julie opened up a gap ahead of Phil and Sarah. At the finish it was Barry and Dennis first, Jon and Julie second, and Phil and Sarah third.
With at least three boats capable of winning the meeting, there was all to play for in the third race. The start was busy especially at the committee boat end with some boats being squeezed out. All the leaders got away cleanly with Phil and Sarah just ahead at the first mark. Barry and Dennis moved into first on the second lap but Jon and Julie overtook both on the next shifty beat. Phil and Sarah then moved into second and were pushing Jon and Julie all the way to the finish. The top two places changed a couple of times but Jon and Julie were leading at the last mark. A tacking duel commenced on the last beat and it looked like Jon and Julie had the lead. Ten yards from the line Phil and Sarah got a gust and a lift to take them through the finish line just inches ahead, to win. This was confirmed by a photograph!

Melton Mowbray Sailing Club Open Meeting - 15 May 2010, By Paul Young and Nancy Gudgeon
This event the fourth in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Melton Mowbray Sailing Club on Saturday 15th May.
The eleven boat fleet included three visitors from Staunton Harold, Emberton Park and Midland Sailing Clubs who enjoyed a sunny day with a light to moderate North Westerly wind.
The first race started from a port biased line, Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC) led the fleet away from the port end of the line followed by Paul Young and Nancy Gudgeon (Midland SC) with the rest of the fleet battling behind. An incident between Dave Simmonds and Gill Cooper (Melton Mowbray SC) and Ian Gamble and Keith Garthwaite (Melton Mowbray SC) allowed Martin Bottomley and Chris Duce (Emberton Park SC) to overtake, however Dave and Gill later recaptured their third place, the race then finished in that order with Nigel and Diana first, Paul and Nancy second, Dave and Gill third and Martin and Chris fourth.
After a particularly superb lunch, the second race started on the same course, again with a port biased line. Nigel and Diana again had an excellent start this time on port tack and crossed the fleet to lead at the windward mark. Behind at a congested windward mark there was much excitement and plenty of place changes. Martin and Chris and also Dave and Gill emerged from this towards the front of the fleet and consistent sailing from both boats ensured they finished in second and third places behind the unstoppable Nigel and Diana. Meanwhile emerging from the windward mark melee in a lowly eight place a determined Paul and Nancy fought back to finish in fourth place. This set the scene for an exciting third race with Martin and Chris, Dave and Gill, plus Paul and Nancy all counting six points each with second, third and fourth places overall yet to be decided.
The third race started from a square line with Nigel and Diana leading the fleet away, this time from the starboard end. The first leg saw many changes of place behind the leader. The windward mark yet again saw lots of excitement, Dave and Gill rounded in second place, Martin and Chris in third ,Ian and Keith in fourth with Paul and Nancy doing a 720 turn. Dave and Gill sailed well and soon consolidated their second place leaving a major battle for third. Martin and Chris, Ian and Keith and also Paul and Nancy saw close racing for the second lap, and on the final lap the completion hotted up with Paul and Nancy and Martin and Chris exchanging places regularly. Paul and Nancy rounded the penultimate mark only just in third place with a determined Martin and Chris just behind. On the last leg Paul and Nancy kept their nerve to finish third. The excitement then mounted again as Ian and Keith pulled up to challenge Martin and Chris close to the finish line. The challenge was unsuccessful and Martin and Chris took fourth place.
This left Dave and Gill and Paul and Nancy both with five points each, with Dave and Gill's better score in the last race giving them the edge.

Earlswood Lake Sailing Club Open Meeting – Report by Paul Young photographs by Gill Leiper
This event the third in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series Sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Earlswood Lakes Sailing Club, on Sunday 2nd May. The eight boat fleet included visitors from Tamworth, Midland and Emberton Park Sailing Clubs who enjoyed a dry and cloudy day with a moderate to strong gusty North Easterly wind which produced few capsizes.
Nigel Allso / Kate Brazier leading the fleet during the first race
In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) led at the first windward mark, from Nigel Allso and Kate Brazier (Tamworth SC) second , Graham Bentley and Janet Butroid (Earlswood lakes SC) third and Paul Young and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) fourth. At the second mark Paul and Iain managed to get the inside of Graham and Janet and then increased the gap on the following downwind leg. Positions were exchanged briefly for a time until the race settled down with Nigel and Kate first, Paul and Iain second and Mike and Christine third. These positions were then maintained to the finish.
The second race started after a short tea break on a new course, this time Nigel and Kate led at the first windward mark from Paul and Iain second, Mike and Christine third and Martin Bottomley and Megan Ward (Emberton Park SC) fourth. Mike and Christine and Paul and Iain then battled for second and third places for a few laps until the race settled down again with Nigel and Kate first Paul and Iain second and Mike and Christine third. The race finished in that order with Nigel and Kate winning convincingly.
Close racing at Earlswood
With the overall winner already decided the dramatic third race, started after an excellent lunch would sort out the remaining places. Sailed in the strongest winds of the day it saw only three boats finish. Nigel Allso had an unfortunate accident on the pontoon breaking his pelvis and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Paul and Iain led at the first mark with Mike and Christine hot on their heels, meanwhile Martin and Megan broke their tiller extension and had to retire. Paul and Iain, and Mike and Christine exchanged places several times over the first couple of laps until a spectacular capsize by Mike and Christine on the gybe mark in front of the clubhouse allowed Paul and Iain to relax a little. Paul and Iain won this race with Graham and Janet second and James Patterson and Paul Clark (Earlswood Lakes SC) third.
Kate Brazier thanked everyone at Earlswood for their help and the whole fleet wishes Nigel a speedy recovery.

This joint Midland/Eastern event the second in the 2010 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Middle Nene Sailing Club on Sunday 18th April.
The twelve boat fleet included nine visitors from Tamworth, Midland, Grafham, Staunton Harold, Ely, Aldenham, Dabchicks and Emberton Park sailing clubs who enjoyed a day of beautiful blue skies, sunshine and an Easterly breeze.
In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) lead at the first mark from Paul Young and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) with Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC) third. Local knowledge and good sailing saw Jane and Nick Scutt (Middle Nene SC) soon catch up. The racing was very close with the lead changing several times. The second race sailed back to back with the first saw Martin Weatherstone and Karen Jewkes (Midland SC) get a good start and lead at the windward mark, more close racing followed with Jane and Nick, Phil and Laura Bevan (Grafham SC) in hot pursuit. The lead was exchanged several times but eventually Martin and Karen made the most of the now failing breeze and won convincingly. Second was Phil and Laura with steady sailing from Kevin and Scott Bilham (Ely SC) earning them third place.
The third race sailed after an excellent lunch was contested in the lightest and most variable wind of the day. Mike and Christine took the left more risky side of the beat to round the windward mark half a boat length in front of Nick and Jane who had taken the more favoured right hand side with Martin Bottomley and Ray Ball (Emberton Park SC) third. All the boats remained close with places being exchanged constantly in the very light and variable wind. Mike and Christine won this race, with Jane and Nick second and Martin and Karen third.
