Yorkshire Ouse Open Meeting

The Annual Cock of the North Enterprise Open Meeting took place at the Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club on Sunday the 19th September.

With a growing fleet of Enterprise sailors at York there was a good turn out of Club boats amounting to 8 but regretfully we could not make a full quota from the club with 4 boats unable to sail for various reasons.  We sadly only had one visitor who took 2nd place in the overall results and he was David Staniforth with Lynne Gilbertson.

The first race started off in light winds with fine drizzle, David Spencer with Ruth Holt and Larry Gray with Neil Botham were both across the start line together, Larry took the lead for the first lap but was out-tacked by David on the second lap to win the first race.

After lunch the rain had stopped and the wind increased to force 3 to make for better sailing.  David Staniforth from Ulley had got the feel of the river took second place in the second race with the winner again being David Spencer.

In the third race David Staniforth was on a mission and showed his transom to the whole fleet and won by an impressive distance.  In our home fleet Keith Cooper with Ed Cooper were consistent with a 3rd 4th and a 2nd .

The final placing were:-
lst  David Spencer with Ruth Holt
2nd David Staniforth with Lynne Gilbertson
3rd  Keith Cooper with Ed Cooper

Overall a good day was had by all.

Cheers Larry Gray

Ogston Sailing Club Open Meeting - Report by  Martin Bradley

On 18th July Osgton hosted a combined North East and Speed Sails sponsored Midland Double Chine series Enterprise Open.

The Enterprise fleet at Oston has been going from strength to strength in recent years with club class races becoming fiercely competitive affairs. Although the visitor turnout was disappointing 13 Ents still enjoyed high quality competition in a F4-5 south westerly with occasional 30mph gusts. Race officer Nick McCleod set some challenging courses to make the most of the conditions - plenty of whooping reaches and hairy gybes

The first race saw a fiercely contested battle between the father and daughter pairing of Martin and Abigail Honnor, Matt Rawson and Kathryn Bradley, and the husband and wife team of Martin and Jackie Bradley. After frequent exchanges of the lead Martin and Jackie squeezed past on the final run of the course planing white knuckled and by the lee.

After the much needed lunch break conditions remained blustery and the racing as tight as ever. The beat was difficult to read and never consistent from one lap to the next. Eventually, however, it was Martin and Abigail who won out in a closely fought battle with Matt and Kathryn.

The final race saw a big wind shift at the start making it difficult to lay the pin end. The two Martins came out well and after Martin H hit the windward mark the Bradleys found themselves with a nice cushion. However they were eventually overhauled, by nearly everyone, and retired with a frayed jib sheet and frayed nerves! Eventually Martin and Abigail pulled out a comfortable lead from Matt and Kathryn who were being hard pressed by Andy and Victoria Gomm with Noel Wilson and Paula Gordon also well in the hunt.

Ogston boats occupied the first 5 slots with Pete Cossey and Christine Barron the leading visitors in 6th. Youngest competitor was George Graham sailing with dad Paul. He was tacking in fine style and showed a lot of promise.

Congratulations to Martin and Abigail on a hard fought win.

Overall Results:

1st 22619 Martin and Abigail Honnor, 2pts
2nd 23169 Matt Rawson and Kathryn Bradley, 4pts
3rd 22911 Martin and Jackie Bradley, 6pts
4th 22418 Andy and Victoria Gomm, 6pts
5th 22512 Noel Wilson and Paula Gordon, 8pts

Tynemouth Regatta 2010 - Enterprise Challenge Cup

There were great sailing conditions in the North Bay on the first day of the latest National Circuit event at Tynemouth SC on the weekend of 10-11 July. However, on  the second day the wind was blowing a steady 35 knots with gusts of 48 knots, and racing was cancelled with the 22 competitors having to rely on Saturdays results with no discards.  Steve Graham and Chris Blundell (Northampton SC) sailed consistently to win the event with two second places from Martin and Abigail Honnor (Ogston SC, 1 and 4) with local sailors Neil and Sarah Piper (3 and 3) third.

Rotherham SC Open Meeting April 18th 2010

The first open of 2010 was held on a fixture congested weekend and as a result was thinly attended but none the less it was a welcome and competitive start to the new series.

Winds were very light and variable in direction for the  open meeting on Sunday 18th April, but the sun was shining and a welcome was extended to all.
The first race was postponed for half an hour  by OOD Alan Gillard whilst something resembling wind emerged over the club house. From a committee boat start Brian Garrison (E23135) from Hallamshire took an early lead. Helen Gray (E22934) Rotherham, caught and passed Brian taking advantage of a significant wind shift. Brian sailed well to regain the lead. At the finish Brian won with Helen 2nd and Dave Staniforth (E20687) Ulley/Sheff Viking 3rd.

After the break for lunch a northerly wind had started to fill in. To make up for the postponement earlier 2 races were run back to back. Brian won the 2nd race with Larry Gray (E22269) from Yorkshire Ouse 2nd and Dave making 3rd.

Although Brian had won, it was still all to play for, for the places. 3 boats were tied on a count of 6 points going into this final race. Helen took the lead at the start, and with great tactical sailing around the 1st mark sailed off to win the last race. Brian came 2nd and Larry came 3rd to give him 3rd overall.
Rotherham SC thank those visitors that came and enjoyed some close racing in rather light winds but in a very sociable atmosphere (volcanic dust free).

Overall Results:
1st E23135, Brian Garrison (Hallamshire SC)
2nd E22934, Helen Gray (Rotherham SC)
3rd E22269, Larry Gray (Yorkshire Ouse SC)
4th E20687, Dave Staniforth (Ulley/Sheffield Viking SC)
5th E22934, Simon Fleetwood (Rotherham SC)
