Ardleigh Open 17/09/11

By Kevin Bilham

A joint OK and Enterprise open meeting was held at Ardleigh SC with four Enterprise visitors attending on a blustery Saturday.

Race 1. Five boats started from the far end of the “L” shaped lake, Kevin Bilham and Jamie Cammann (Ely SC) arrived at the windward mark just a head of Scott Bilham and Jack Cammann (Ely SC) with Graham Kirkup and Mr Wang (Hunts SC) just behind them. Ian and Sue Simpson (Alexandra SC) where just a head of the Ardleigh Enterprise.

By the 3rd mark, Kevin and Jamie had managed to get away, leaving Graham and Scott to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd, Ian and Sue had dropped off a little, and the Ardleigh Enterprise had capsized on what was a lively run down to the leeward mark.

Scott and Graham continued to swap places though out the race with Graham taking 2nd by a few inches from Scott.

Whilst returning to the slip way Graham managed to do the most spectacular Chinese Jibe, leaving he and Mr. Wang swimming.

After a hearty Lunch layed on by the Ardleigh Galley All boat where back on the water in even heaver conditions.

Race 2. Kevin again had a good first beat and arrived at the windward mark just a head of Scott.Graham had capsized in a big gust, leaving Ian and Sue in 3rd place.

The race continued without any place further changes.

Race 3. The race Officer had moved the start to just outside the club house, leaving a much shorter beat. All 4 boats arrived at the windward mark in close proximity, but soon Kevin and Scott had managed to break free from the other 2 boats.

By the penultimate mark Scott was in a strong 2nd, with Graham a good 20 boat lengths behind, but somehow Scott managed to get himself becalmed giving Graham the chance to sail past into 2nd place with the help of a strong gust .

Enterprise Open at the Alexandra Yacht Club 10th September 2011

By Ian Simpson

The poor forecast of high winds obviously affected the numbers for the AYC Open with only 2 travellers joining the 3 club boats. The forecast on the day of 16mph winds looked excellent but the start had to be delayed with non existent wind and any wind there was swinging from SSW to NE and back again, making the setting of the course a nightmare.

Finally ¾ hour late, race one got underway only for the light breeze to die again. Phil Bevan gained a commanding lead only to find the windward mark in the deep channel, stuck in a strong tide so the gap closed with Keith and Katy Tyler in second and Ian & Sue Simpson 3rd Ashley Simpson and John Sherwood were the first of the two non travellers in front of Pete and Chris Dear. It took 50 minutes to reach the windward mark, suddenly the wind arrived and with flat water the run down the side of the pier was relatively brisk. Both Phil and Keith  going a bit wide with the wind and outgoing tide, this enabled Ian & Sue  to take second place just holding on to finish behind Phil and Laura with Keith & Katy  3rd, Ashley & John  held off the challenge of Peter & Chris for 4th and 5th respectively.

Race 2 started in much better wind about force 4 and with it the waves arrived. Keith, Phil and Ian all lined up on the line Ian & Sue to windward right on the start buoy foolishly. Phil suggesting to Ian that he should sail a bit higher, forcing him to start too early the double hoot made Keith & Katy think they too were over the start. This left Phil in a commanding lead and by the windward mark Keith & Katy had taken Ian & Sue for 3rd, Peter & Chris went round in 4th with Ashley&John bringing up the rear. It stayed in this order to the finish apart from Ashley & John passing Peter & Chris for fourth place.

With the tide going fast and wind dropping again race three was over a shorter course with only four boats starting and after a brief battle at the start it turned into a bit of a procession again with Phil & Laura leading the way, Keith & Katy 2nd, Ian & Sue 3rd and Ashley & John not too detached in fourth.

ENTERPRISE NATIONAL CIRCUIT OPEN MEETING AT HUNTS SC 18/19 JUNE 2011

INCORPORATING EASTERN AREA NIMBUS SERIES (HOUGHTON WHALE TROPHY)

Much effort had been made by club members to clear the water of weed over the past weeks, and whilst there was a considerable amount on the margins the effect on race track was minimalised, however, it did pay to occasionally to check foils.

RACE 1

In a moderate south-westerly AJ (Alan Johnson) got off to a good start and took the lead from Ann Jackson with Martin Bottomley third. On the third lap Scott Bilham in his father’s boat overhauled Martin for a third place finish.

RACE 2

The wind had swung more to the west and saw AJ once again first at the windward mark closely followed by Graham Kirkup with a gap to the rest of the fleet. On the second lap a heavy squall came though allowing Ann to gain second place whilst Graham renegotiated the gybe mark. Martin capsized but then in the blustery condition AJ also fell to the extremes, however, with a fare margin he righted and did not loose his position and continued to take line honours with Ann second and Scott third.

RACE 3

AJ and Ann had to dip back over the line at the start but still managed to pick the right course to the windward mark in first and second with Martin third. As the race progressed the whole fleet were in close contact for the next two laps, but then an horrendous hail storm hit with plummeting temperatures which Peter and Elaine Dolling wisely avoided by taking early tea and cakes. AJ again took first, Ann second and Scott third.

RACE 4 Sunday

In more stable conditions of force 3-4 we were joined by Keith and Katie Tyler and Ian and Sue Simpson.

Graham took an early lead followed by Ann and AJ, but on the second lap his main halyard snapped requiring urgent attention ashore. It was AJ again who took the lead to finish first with Ann second and Scott again third.

RACE 5

With a very close battle to the first mark AJ once again managed to get in the lead. Keith and Graham were having a ding dong, but Keith tipped in blaming jet-lag for the lapse of concentration. First over the line was AJ followed by Ann, with Graham third.

Grafham Water Open 5/6/2011

Report and photographs By Kevin Bilham

Four Boats attended the annual open meeting at Grafham SC and were greeted with a wind force 6 gusting 7 to 8.

3 boats decided to launch from the lee shore in waves up to 2 foot high. Scott Bilham with Jack Cammann where the first off, followed by Phil Bevan with Jamie Cammann, then John and Molly Wells got under way.

Before the start, Scott and Jack capsized but managed to empty their boat very quickly and joined the other two for the start.

Phil and Jamie got to the windward mark first followed by Scott and Jack just in front of John and Molly. All three boats went like rockets down the 2nd leg and then on to the run, towards the jibe mark, Phil and Scott both decided to tack round leaving only John to try the jibe, shipping some water in the attempt.

The positions remained the same until rounding the jibe mark for the 2nd time where Scott unfortunate capsized, allowing John to get though. However, Scott and Jack managed to clear their boat very quickly and soon were back on John’s tail. By the end of the final windward leg, Phil had extended his lead even further, Scott and Jack had overtaken John and were now in 2nd  position. All the boats managed to stay upright until the final beat where Scott and Jack capsized 30m from the line allowing John and Molly to take 2nd place.

After a long discussion the three competitors decided to call it a day as the wind was increasing further.

Final Positions:

1st 22439 Phil Bevan and Jamie Cammann GWSC

2nd 22222 John and Molly Wells Ely SC

3rd 22315 Scott Bilham and Jack Cammann Ely SC

50th Enterprise Open at Ely Sailing Club - By Alayne Seymour

Twenty two sailors took part in three hours of racing during Ely’s 50th Annual Enterprise Open Meeting. The trophy was the Roswell Enterprise Cup, which was presented by Mary Fyson back in 1971. Four clubs from the Eastern and Broads Area were represented: Six boats from Ely, three from Hunts and one from Dabchicks and one from Alexandra Yacht Club.

A force 4 southerly wind greeted the competitors with testing gusts causing several capsizes which became significant in the final results. All participants battled the conditions and each other with fifty five place changes during the three race series.

In the first race Ely’s husband and wife team of Andy and Hannah Wilcox lead the way from start to finish with a twenty–one second advantage over visiting pair Brian and Linda Cumming. Third were Ely’s Kevin Bilham and Jamie Cammann.

The second race saw the married couples leading the way again until the fifth lap when an unexplained capsize on the penultimate windward leg saw Andy and Hannah drop from 2nd to 4th . The Cummings the winners by 54 seconds from Kevin & Jamie who piped Keith and Katie Tyler by one second on the finishing line having followed them for most of the tussle.

The third and deciding race saw Kevin & Jamie enter an early lead only to be caught by a gust on the first downwind leg which put them into an involuntary gybe and capsize.

Brian and Linda then hit the front and sailed away from the chasing pack and won by 43 seconds. Keith and Katie Tyler and Scott Bilham with Jack Cammann went from 5th and 6th to 2nd and 3rd respectively during the final race proving that perseverance pays.

The final results were:

1st Brian and Linda Cumming from Dabchicks Sailing Club with two firsts,

2nd Andy and Hannah Wilcox counting a 1st and 4th,

3rd Keith and Katie Tyler, from Hunts S.C., counting a 2nd and 3rd who beat Kevin Bilham and Jamie Cammann who also had a 2nd and 3rd but the capsize in the final race cost the Ely pair third place overall.

The all lady team of Suzie Sallis and Jo Broad also from Ely took the ladies prize finishing 9th overall with a 6th and 7th to count.

ENTERPRISE MIDLAND AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS/NATIONAL CIRCUIT AT MIDDLE NENE SAILING CLUB.

Report by Paul Young, Alan Johnson and Steve Graham

Photographs (C) Laurie Jones

This joint Midland / Eastern event the third in the Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Middle Nene SC over the weekend of  9th/10th April.

The twenty one boat fleet included seventeen visitors from thirteen different clubs from as far as Abersoch , Dabchicks, Southend, Chester, Ogston,  Ely, Hunts, Frampton, Midland, Draycote, Northampton, Bartley and Sutton  Sailing Clubs.

Saturdays conditions were excellent with  warm sunshine and a moderate breeze blowing down the lake.

Race one saw three premature starters return to start correctly. Ges Brown and Julie Moore (Chester SC) sailing the new prototype epoxy Enterprise made a excellent start from the pin end of the line to lead at the windward mark from Paul Young and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) and Martin and Abigail Honner (Ogston SC). Later Phil and Sarah Kirk (Frampton SC)  caught up and a great three way battle was had between Martin and Abigail, Paul and Iain and Phil and Sarah. At the finish Ges and Julie were first Phil and Sarah second, Martin and Abigail third and Paul and Iain fourth.

The second race started after lunch on a new course. This time Jon Woodward and Karen Jewkes (Bartley SC) led at the windward mark from Kevin Bilham and Jamie Cammon (Ely SC) with Alan and Matt Johnson (SCYC) third. Kevin and Jamie passed Jon and Karen to lead for a lap but as the breeze dropped a little Kevin and Jamie dropped several places allowing Alan and Matt to take a commanding lead. Later Steve Graham and Chris Blundell made the best the windshifts on the on the beat to secure second place but could not quite catch Alan and Matt. Phil and Sarah finished third and Ges and Julie fourth.

The third race was sailed on the same course; a keen start saw two boats over the line at the start.  Hot youth sailors Calum and Rory MacKenzie nailed the first beat to round the windward mark first chased by the pack. On the following laps Phil and Sarah made the most of the runs to take the lead only to be pushed all the way to the finish line by Alan and Matt with Steve and Chris third and Calum and Rory fourth.

Sunday dawned with a lighter and more variable wind. Following a general recall, Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Sutton SC) sailing up the middle of the beat crossed the entire fleet which the majority of the fleet had gone left on.

However it was Alan and Matt who rounded the windward mark first followed by Steve and Chris and then Ges and Julie. Alan and Matt read the difficult conditions perfectly and built up a commanding lead which they held to the finish, second was Steve and Chris with Mike and Christine recovering to third.

Local boat Jane and Nick Scutt (Middle Nene SC) were fourth.

Race five sailed back to back saw Alan and Matt starting at the pin end getting away nicely. Steve and Chris were over the line and had to return. Alan and Matt chose the left side of the course again and rounded the windward mark first closely followed by Jane and Nick, Kevin and Jamie, Martin and Abigail and Ges and Julie. Alan and Matt extended their lead again downwind. On the second beat Martin and Abigail went right and pulled up to second again followed by Jane and Nick, Ges and Julie and Kevin and Jamie. These positions were maintained to the short final beat were Ges and Julie took full advantage of a favourable windshift to pip Jane and Nick on the line with Kevin and Jamie fifth.

Enterprise Open Meeting 27th March 2011

A total of 28 Lasers and 15 Enterprises turned out for the annual Broadwater Enterprise and Laser combined Open Meeting on 27th March 2011. 43 boats on the water must be something of a record for the Club and tested the capabilities of our race organisation, galley, and  other facilities to the full. Once again Enterprise visitors came from near and far including two boats, sailed by Kevin and Scott Biham, from Ely. We were most pleased to welcome once again Paul Young, the Commodore of the Enterprise Association, campaigning in the new prototype Enterprise.

A sunny spring day, but with very light and fickle winds, gave the competitors and our race officers, Kevin Morgan and Steve Langford, some challenging conditions throughout,  but things went to plan with all races getting off on time.

The start of the first race, 5 minutes after the Lasers, got away cleanly and was led out by Pete Jackson and Julie Bennett from BASC, closely followed by Dave and John Beaney from Castaways SC and then Greg and Pam Hart from Broadwater. Light winds coming over the trees turned the reach behind the islands to Number 4 into bit of a lottery and major gaps opened up between the leaders and the rest of the fleet. Eventually Martin and Laurence Davis from Rugby and Daventry SC got through into third place with Pete and Julie finishing first, well ahead of everyone else.

The fleet retired to the clubhouse for the usual high quality Broadwater lunch provided by Mary Allen, and ably assisted by Margaret Banger and Sandra Wilson. Excellent hot food for over 50 people was served up inside 1 hour which, considering our limited club facilities, is to be marvelled at!

The second race followed a similar pattern to race one but was led from start to finish by Phil Bevan and Shiv Ladyman from Grafham Water SC. Stop start conditions, as the wind dropped and filled in from behind, once more made the reaches and runs a bit of a nightmare. Second and third places were keenly contested throughout with the Beaneys just pipping Pete Jackson to take second place at the line. And so Pete and Dave were both in contention for overall winner going into the third race.

A large wind shift just after the start of the third race enabled the Harties to round the windward mark first and lead round the first lap until the wind died on the run to number 6. They were passed by Pete and Julie, Martin and Laurence, the Beanies, and then by Joyce and Martin from Broadwater, who clearly found more wind especially on the last beat. The first three boats were very close at the finish with Pete and Julie just taking line honours to win the event overall.

It takes a lot of organisation and effort to handle an open meeting of this scale and I would like to extend our Enterprise Fleet’s thanks to everyone who helped on the day in whatever capacity. Special thanks go to Kevin and Mary, David Banger, Mark Turner and their assistants for manning the rescue boat, to Dave Wilson behind the bar and to Dave Cadd for registering all of the entries.

And in conclusion, an enjoyable day was had by everyone. We showed the club off to good effect to many visitors, and we made a healthy contribution to  the club funds!
