2011 Noble Marine Nationals Race 1- July 24th
 Held at Looe  SC

Tim and Hannah Sadler win on day of fickle winds

RACING RESULTS DAY 1-  24 JULY.

The Enterprise Championships has returned to one of its favourite venues at Looe SC supported by a strong fleet of 58 Enterprises. An impressive sight of Blue Sails on the horizon. The first day was sailed in very variable wind conditions. A ‘shifty’ Force 1 – 2 giving the Race Officer, Roger Hocking and his team, a difficult task. There was a general recall and a lot of changing courses to accommodate the wind conditions.

ENTERPRISE NOBLE MARINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, LOOE SC, JULY 24 – 29.

Report by Barry Moss on races sailed on Sunday - Tuesday

58 Enterprise dinghies from all corners of the UK are in Cornwall for the Enterprise Nationals.

RACE 1. Harwich Borough Cup. After a one lap Practice Race, Race 1 started in overcast conditions with a gentle Force 2-3 from the North West. The Pathfinder, Ann Jackson/Nikki Birrell, Burghfield SC suffered a big header causing a general recall. The fleet then started with a long beat towards Looe Island, with the lead at the windward mark held by Christian Birrell and Sam Breary of Weymouth SC.  By the end of the next lap of an Olympic course, Alan and Matt Johnson, SCYC and SCC had pulled through to claim 3rd place and on the final beat moved into the lead, which they held to the finish, followed across the line by Tim and Hannah Sadler, Yorkshire Dales SC, Christian Birrell/Sam Breary, Phil and Sarah Kirk from Frampton On Severn SC and Paul Hobson/Libby Allen, Warsash/BCYC, who were sailing the prototype Mk 3 Rondar Enterprise. A surprising development after the finish resulted in Alan and Matt Johnson retiring for completing only 1 penalty turn on the first beat.

RACE 2. Lanning Trophy. Racing was postponed for the morning and the fleet launched in sunshine and a fresh breeze for a 2.00 pm start. The fleet started in a steady Force 3 from the NW with the lead at the mark taken by Paul Hobson/Libby Allen followed by Alan and  Matt Johnson, two boat lengths down from Tim and Hannah Sadler.  Paul Hobson/Libby Allen pulled away on the second reach and gained further, taking a big lift on the beat. Tim and Hannah Sadler lost places on the beat, dropping out of the top ten!  At the finish Paul Hobson/Libby Allen won from Pete Lawson/Gareth Balfour from Bassenthwaite SC with Christian Birrell/Sam Breary 3rd, Alan and Matt Johnson 4th and Charles and Rachel Adams 5th. Libby Allen at 13 years being the youngest crew ever to win a race at the Nationals,  took great delight in winning as she held the Lanning Trophy aloft at the Prize Presentation.

RACE 3, Holyhead Challenge Trophy, with the same sun and breeze. The course was reset as the wind direction moved to the North. A long beat to Looe Island spread the fleet but Pete Lawson/Gareth Balfour lead at the windward mark followed by Tim and Hannah Sadler and Christian  Birrell/Sam Breary with Veterans Brian and Linda Cummings, Dabchicks SC in 4th.  Pete Lawson/Gareth Balfour who had been first out of the gate start squandered the lead by gybing onto a run instead of bearing off on a reach, losing 3 places! At the finish Tim and Hanah Sadler won from Christian Birrell/Sam Breary, Paul Hobson/Libby Allen with Steve Graham/Chris Blundell from Northampton SC 4th.

TUESDAY DAY 3 RACES 4 and 5 – There was a two hour postponement – Enterprises took to the water about 1 00 pm. The wind was very light and variable and despite the efforts by Roger Hocking and his race team to lay a course for the competitors there was to be no racing today – just sunbathing, swimming and rocking gently in the boat!! It is Lay Day Wednesday and wind permitting there will be 3 Races Thursday and 3 on Friday (forecast suggest this could be Tricky!!)

Invitation from Looe SC to the Noble Marine Nationals

When you want to combine your holiday and the National championship Looe provides the perfect venue for sailors and their families and friends. Make sure you book to join us from 23rd July 2011.

Looe is easily accessed Via the M5/A38 Devon Expressway and is a busy, thriving fishing port, with excellent beaches, restaurants, cafes and pubs all within 100m of the Sailing Club. The dinghy park is right next to the main beach. Sailing families will undoubtedly appreciate this fact. The sandy beach is very safe and lies within a few metres of the main launching slip. This is ideal for the non-sailing part of the family who can relax whilst competitors get down to some serious racing.

The town is geared to tourism and there is a comprehensive range of accommodation available; from camping, caravanning, self-catering flats and B&B’s to first class hotels. For the more energetic there are various coastal footpaths and inland walkways, with magnificent views. We have an excellent 18-hole golf course within a five-minute drive. The tennis courts, bowling and putting greens are also popular, together with a choice of boating and fishing trips

For many Looe’s charm lies in its narrow streets for others it is the never-ending activity of its harbour and beach. Outside of the town the surrounding area is worth a visit. Bodmin Moor and the infamous Jamaica Inn is a short drive to the North, while 30 minutes drive to the East takes you to the Historic and busy city of Plymouth. This City offers a chance to shop and visit the National Marine Aquarium. Head West and you will make your way to the Eden project within 30 minutes.

Looe’s Tourist Information office can be contacted on 01503 262072. You can find good accommodation information if you log onto enjoyengland.com and look for Looe in the index.

We look forward to seeing you in Looe where a warm and friendly welcome awaits you.
