18 boats contested the Enterprise Youth Nationals held at Barnt Green.

Conditions were excellent with a southerly force 3-4 wind with stronger gusts, causing several capsizes. Unfortunately the water was about 2.5 metres down which restricted the race area.

Race 1 began after a short postponement to give those delayed by traffic, time to get on the water.

A port biased line saw many boats clustered at the pin end. Callum and Rory Mackenzie (Ogston SC) rounded the windward mark first despite a 720° turn for a start line incident! 2nd was Matt Velamail and Tim Brownell (Ulley SC) with 3rd Alan Roberts and Alex Pilkington (Royal Navy SA).

Callum and Rory proceeded to pull away from the fleet. A gybe mark incident later saw Matt and Tim doing a 720° – allowing Alan and Alex to gain back 3rd. Following close battles throughout the fleet Tom Hewitt and Hannah Adams (WLYC) briefly lead on the penultimate lap, before being passed by Callum and Rory again, who held the lead to the finish. 2nd was Tom and Hannah who sportingly retired after passing slightly the wrong side of gate 4 on the second lap. 3rd was Matt and Tim with Alan and Alex 4th.

Race 2

Callum and Rory starting from the port end of the line again, causing more collisions on the line and rounded the windward mark first. 2nd was James Morley and Lucy Twyham (Ulley SC) with Alan and Alex 3rd. On the second lap Callum and Rory extended the lead and at the windward mark Alan and Alex were 2nd with Tom and Hannah 3rd. Later the battle for 2nd intensified with Alan and Alex, James and Lucy, and Matt and Tim in close contention. On the beat Tom and Hannah also joined in the battle. The wind dropped on the fourth lap and Alan and Alex extended their lead over 3rd placed Tom and Hannah and 4th placed Matt and Tim.

At the finish Callum and Rory won easily, however were later disqualified following a protest. This left Alan and Alex 1st, Matt and Tim 2nd, with fast finishing 3rd Rory Jones and Rachel Lennox (Barnt Green SC)

Race 3

Race 3 started after one general recall. At the end of first lap Callum and Rory held a large lead ahead of Matt and Tim, Tom and Hannah, and Sam Woods and Rick Hayton (Glossop).

Sam and Rick had a great second lap moving up to 2nd ahead of Matt and Tim and Fergus Barnham and Hannah Sadler (Yorkshire Dales SC). On the third lap Sam and Rick closed the gap to 1st and briefly held the lead before overstanding the windward mark, allowing Callum and Rory to retake the lead, which they held to the finish.

The battle for 3rd, 4th and 5th remained close to the end, with Tom and Hannah finishing 3rd, Matt and Tim 4th and Fergus and Hannah 5th.

Race 4
Harry Hill and Will Lomas got best start and led at windward mark, but rounded the wrong way and whilst correcting were overtaken by several other boats. Matt and Tim then led and at the next mark it was Matt and Tim followed by Callum and Rory 2nd, James and Lucy 3rd and Tom and Hannah 4th.

At the leeward mark Matt and Tim led from Callum and Rory, but by the next mark Callum and Rory had taken the lead, Matt and Tim 2nd.

Callum and Rory extended their lead over the next lap with a big battle for 2nd with much excitement and close battles being had.

On the second lap Callum and Rory still led from Alan and Alex with Matt and Tim 3rd and Tom and Hannah 4th.

In the laps that followed a close downwind leg saw much place changing and the 3rd place being hotly contested.

At the finish Callum and Rory were 1st, Alan and Alex 2nd, Matt and Tim 3rd, Fergus and Hannah 4th, Tom and Hannah 5th.

Race 5
Fergus and Hannah got good start but at the windward mark 1st Tom and Hannah, 2nd Sam and Rick, 3rd Matt and Tim, 4th Rory and Rachel, 5th Fergus and Hannah, 6th Callum and Rory. Tom and Sam both pulled away from the big group leaving a contest for 3rd place. Sam and Rick passed Tom and Hannah on the next beat to lead at the start of the long downwind leg.

Sam and Rick continued to lead from Tom and Hannah, who even managed to fall out of his boat and still hold on to second place.
Sam and Rick continued to lead on the second lap from Tom and Hannah and Callum and Rory in 3rd. Callum and Rory passed Tom and Hannah on the beat to gain 2nd with Tom and Hannah 3rd.

At the finish Sam and Rick were 1st, Callum and Rory 2nd ,  however he retired after the race for a start line incident, Tom and Hannah just therefore holding on to 2nd from Alan and Alex 3rd and Rory and Rachel 4th, with Fergus and Hannah close behind.

Youth Nationals! A competitors view by Chris Winters

Saturday dawned the first day of the Enterprise Youth Nationals. This was the second Enterprise Youths I’d competed in. The first was last year when I spent most of the time not far from the back of the fleet. I was hoping to improve to around about mid-fleet, but if I’m honest, I had no idea where I’d end up as this was probably only about the fourth time I’d helmed in a big fleet this year.

When I arrived I was chuffed to find the boat already rigged courtesy of a certain Mr Young, a crew ready and willing to sail, and best of all bacon sarnies on the go! Paul further surprised me with his generosity in letting me use his virtually brand new crispy sails (definitely a luxury I hadn’t been expecting). As I got changed the excitement and adrenalin was already building. Finally a chance to find out if I’d really learnt much about sailing in the last year!
We launched, me and my relatively inexperienced crew Alex. Seeing as this was only his third time in an Enterprise and probably only the second or third time I’d sailed with him I wasn’t expecting too much… but one thing I certainly did learn is that Alex definitely has a natural talent and feel for sailing and is no slouch in the front of an Enterprise!

The 5 minute gun blew, I took a good hard look at the water, pretended I knew what I was talking about and told Alex we were going to start at the committee boat end. One minute to the start- PANIC TIME! It seemed most of the fleet had decided committee boat end and there really wasn’t any room to squeeze into the space I wanted on the line. So in a snap decision I shot the wrong side of the committee boat, luckily everyone was line shy (not as if I even looked to check or anything!) and I managed to sneak back behind the line at around five seconds and make a good start. PHEW! I picked the first beat quite well and managed to round the windward mark 4th which left me with the thought ‘maybe I’m not so bad at this sailing business after all…’

One problem though… consistency definitely wasn’t my middle name that weekend as I was later told after the finish of the last race that I’d been in third position at some point in every race, which definitely wasn’t reflected in the end result of 4 out of 5 of my races!

The start of the second race didn’t go so swimmingly and we rounded the windward mark well back in the fleet. Luckily on the first reach we had a massive stroke of luck. A pack of six boats ahead totally stopped in a hole, so we decided to sail lower in a tiny bit of wind and ghosted past 6 boats in one leg going from 12th to 6th. Success was definitely the word!

Now the third and final race of the day, the target being to not finish ruddy eighth for a third race in a row! We were forced down to the pin end of the line by a boat below us, which as it turned out really paid as we went hard left and had the wonderful feeling of going into the mark not seeing a single boat in front of us apart from one or two boats that slipped in from the right (I really can’t remember!). The best thing being, in this race we actually kept our position! Another thing I really started to notice was just how well we were sailing upwind making loads of ground on other boats… but also how averagely we were sailing downwind usually losing ground. We broke away from the three boats behind us largely due to their sailing aggressive sailing and slowing each other up. We finished 3rd…probably my most satisfying result of any race… ever!

We finished day one in 6th overall hoping for some good results on day 2, ideally…although we knew it’d be difficult… to win the under15’s trophy, the one person in the way was an excellent sailor named Harry Hill…who was unfortunately for us also under 15! Our only hope was that he had to count a bad race from day 2 due to him dropping out of one race after a collision, it was a long shot but we were hopeful…

On day two in the fourth race we had an excellent start rounding the first mark in a satisfying second place…but with the rest of the fleet rounding close behind. We set off on the run in virtually no wind and me confused about which line was better, a slight bit of wind came through higher than our course and most the fleet came through…disaster… At the leeward mark it was VERY busy. We thought we might be able to slip in on the inside and not get caught in the raft…Unfortunately there were 2 boats inside taking their time. This forced us to about 2nd from last! A definite contrast! Despite all this it was a very satisfying race pulling back through the fleet right from the back. Our upwind tactics often gained us about 2 places per beat and we finished a respectable 14th.

In race 5 we had our only race where we had a bad first beat, rounding somewhere mid-fleet. The boats were all pretty close after the mark and we thought we might pull through into the front pack…which didn’t quite happen... The boat positions in this race were slightly upside down with some sailors usually further back in the fleet, far forward, and vice-versa…We sailed okay and finished ninth, definitely ending our hopes in the under 15’s, but knowing we’d sailed well enough to win the old boats prize - a great plus. Knowing we’d won an individual prize and finishing in the top third was really great and a good confidence boost! Definitely back next year!
