These must do events mark the welcome return of Bala, and also enable you to get in some crafty practice at Looe before the Nationals.

The Chipstead high points scoring system gives you a higher score the more boats you beat. Phil Kirk's explanation of how the system works is given here, and using this table you can calculate your score.

2011 Scottish Nationals at St Mary's Loch SC – 27 and 28th August

Saturdays two races were sailed in a force 2/3 wind with conditions much stronger on Sunday. Five boats blew over in the night!

After a postponement, about half the fleet set off to race. There were several capsizes in the gusty conditions. After reaching the race area, and setting the course the race officer declared the conditions too windy and racing was abandoned for the day. A wind speed of over 33knts was recorded on the committee boat on several occasions.

The event was decided on the two races sailed on the Saturday with no discards. This years champions are Steve Graham and Chris Blundell with Ali Morrish and Shona Redpath 2nd and Ges Brown and Julie Moore 3rd

Enterprise Severnside Area Championships 2011 at Penarth Yacht Club

Very breezy on the first day with everyone capsizing several times. Sunday was quite a contrast. The wind was very light and several boats did not finish inside the time limit. In the last race only two boats got round the gybe mark before the tide got too strong and nobody else made it.

ENTERPRISE NATIONAL CIRCUIT OPEN MEETING AT HUNTS SC 18/19 JUNE 2011

INCORPORATING EASTERN AREA NIMBUS SERIES (HOUGHTON WHALE TROPHY)

Much effort had been made by club members to clear the water of weed over the past weeks, and whilst there was a considerable amount on the margins the effect on race track was minimalised, however, it did pay to occasionally to check foils.

RACE 1

In a moderate south-westerly AJ (Alan Johnson) got off to a good start and took the lead from Ann Jackson with Martin Bottomley third. On the third lap Scott Bilham in his father’s boat overhauled Martin for a third place finish.

RACE 2

The wind had swung more to the west and saw AJ once again first at the windward mark closely followed by Graham Kirkup with a gap to the rest of the fleet. On the second lap a heavy squall came though allowing Ann to gain second place whilst Graham renegotiated the gybe mark. Martin capsized but then in the blustery condition AJ also fell to the extremes, however, with a fare margin he righted and did not loose his position and continued to take line honours with Ann second and Scott third.

RACE 3

AJ and Ann had to dip back over the line at the start but still managed to pick the right course to the windward mark in first and second with Martin third. As the race progressed the whole fleet were in close contact for the next two laps, but then an horrendous hail storm hit with plummeting temperatures which Peter and Elaine Dolling wisely avoided by taking early tea and cakes. AJ again took first, Ann second and Scott third.

RACE 4 Sunday
In more stable conditions of force 3-4 we were joined by Keith and Katie Tyler and Ian and Sue Simpson.

Graham took an early lead followed by Ann and AJ, but on the second lap his main halyard snapped requiring urgent attention ashore. It was AJ again who took the lead to finish first with Ann second and Scott again third.

RACE 5

With a very close battle to the first mark AJ once again managed to get in the lead. Keith and Graham were having a ding dong, but Keith tipped in blaming jet-lag for the lapse of concentration. First over the line was AJ followed by Ann, with Graham third.

Noble Marine 2011 Inland Championships
held at Bristol Corinthian YC  14-15th of May

Report by Paula Southworth.
Nick Craig and Toby Lewis by one point! 49 Enterprises on the water – there was an entry of 52 Boats but circumstances prevented 3 competitors attending the event. BCYC provided an excellent venue for what turned out to be a ‘Titanic Battle’ between Nick Craig/Toby Lewis (23170 Team Gill from Frensham Pond SC) and Alan Johnson/Paula Fisher (19876 Subsonic Winkle  from SCYC/SSC). This Championship was a 2 Day event – The first race on Saturday started in a good breeze with strong gusts descending from the hills near the windward mark making the approach difficult! The wind increased during the day resulting in very rough water, capsizes and boat damage. Sunday started lighter 3 – 4 but again increased throughout the day with boats hurtling along the reach to the leeward mark in clouds of spray. The Championship was so close. Races 1, 2 and 5 were won by Nick Craig/Toby Lewis and Races 3 and 4 by the Alan Johnson and Paula Fisher. Everything depended on the final race which Nick won with Alan in second place.

First class sailing from Ann Jackson / Richard Adams gave Ann 3rd Overall and the Enterprise Inlands Ladies Championship. Chris Winters/Alex Homer from Midland SC took the Youth’s Trophy. There was good support from Looe and Penarth Sailing Clubs. The Enterprise Nationals are being hosted by Looe SC during the last week in July. BCYC were thanked for providing a memorable event both on and off the water. There was a 3 Course Evening Meal, with waitress service and an entertaining and enjoyable game of skittles on Saturday evening. Enterprise Association category prizes were awarded to:-

1st Veteran Helm (over 60) 19876 Subsonic Winkle Alan Johnson and Paula Fisher from SCYC/SSC

New epoxy Enterprise sailing in a windy SWArea Championships at Looe SC 31 April - 1 May. Video.

Midland Area Championships and

National Circuit at Middle Nene S.C.

Report by Paul Young, Alan Johnson and Steve Graham.

This joint Midland / Eastern event the third in the Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Middle Nene SC over the weekend of 9th/10th April.

The twenty one boat fleet included seventeen visitors from thirteen different clubs from as far as Abersoch , Dabchicks, Southend, Chester, Ogston, Ely, Hunts, Frampton, Midland, Draycote, Northampton, Bartley and Sutton Sailing Clubs.

Saturdays conditions were excellent with warm sunshine and a moderate breeze blowing down the lake.

Race one saw three premature starters return to start correctly. Ges Brown and Julie Moore (Chester S&CC) sailing the new prototype epoxy Enterprise made a excellent start from the pin end of the line to lead at the windward mark from Paul Young and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) and Martin and Abigail Honner (Ogston SC). Later Phil and Sarah Kirk (Frampton SC) caught up and a great three way battle was had between Martin and Abigail, Paul and Iain and Phil and Sarah. At the finish Ges and Julie were first Phil and Sarah second, Martin and Abigail third and Paul and Iain fourth.

The second race started after lunch on a new course. This time Jon Woodward and Karen Jewkes (Bartley SC) led at the windward mark from Kevin Bilham and Jamie Cammon (Ely SC) with Alan and Matt Johnson (SCYC) third. Kevin and Jamie passed Jon and Karen to lead for a lap but as the breeze dropped a little Kevin and Jamie dropped several places allowing Alan and Matt to take a commanding lead. Later Steve Graham and Chris Blundell made the best the windshifts on the on the beat to secure second place but could not quite catch Alan and Matt. Phil and Sarah finished third and Ges and Julie fourth.

The third race was sailed on the same course; a keen start saw two boats over the line at the start.  Hot youth sailors Calum and Rory MacKenzie nailed the first beat to round the windward mark first chased by the pack. On the following laps Phil and Sarah made the most of the runs to take the lead only to be pushed all the way to the finish line by Alan and Matt with Steve and Chris third and Calum and Rory fourth.

Sunday dawned with a lighter and more variable wind. Following a general recall, Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Sutton SC) sailing up the middle of the beat crossed the entire fleet which the majority of the fleet had gone left on.

However it was Alan and Matt who rounded the windward mark first followed by Steve and Chris and then Ges and Julie. Alan and Matt read the difficult conditions perfectly and built up a commanding lead which they held to the finish, second was Steve and Chris with Mike and Christine recovering to third. Local boat Jane and Nick Scutt (Middle Nene SC) were fourth.

Race five sailed back to back saw Alan and Matt starting at the pin end getting away nicely. Steve and Chris were over the line and had to return. Alan and Matt chose the left side of the course again and rounded the windward mark first closely followed by Jane and Nick, Kevin and Jamie, Martin and Abigail and Ges and Julie. Alan and Matt extended their lead again downwind. On the second beat Martin and Abigail went right and pulled up to second again followed by Jane and Nick, Ges and Julie and Kevin and Jamie. These positions were maintained to the short final beat were Ges and Julie took full advantage of a favourable windshift to pip Jane and Nick on the line with Kevin and Jamie fifth.
