Race 1 Wind 3-4 Jonathan Woodward & Alex Halliwell rounded the first mark followed by Nick Craig & Fiona Clark on the next windward leg Craig & Fiona managed to squeeze in at the windward mark, although Woodward & Halliwell chased him down the next two reaches they were unable to overhaul him.
Race 2 The wind was 2-3 with a port end bias Woodward & Halliwell were able to secure the pin and tack onto port rounding first. Craig & Fiona 2nd, followed by Nick & Rachel Jackson. On the second lap Woodward & Halliwell worked right looking for more wind followed by Craig & Fiona, at the windward mark who took the lead.
Race 3 Jackson had rounded first, followed by Craig & Clark at the end of the first beat, closely followed by Marty Cuppage & Conor Dooly. On the second beat Craig & Clark overhauled the Jacksons, a position that they maintained until the finish.
Race 4 With a good force 3 – 4 in Dublin Bay the competitors faced a day of Olympic courses. Andy Ritchie & Arthur Mason, Youth National Champs, rounded first and were closely followed by Craig & Clark. The fleet mistook the next mark, to the advantage of Ann Jackson & Alan Skeens who spotted the error of others. At the end of the first lap Ann Jackson was in the lead followed by Roy & Neil Van Maanen. On the second beat there was a large right hand shift allowing Craig & Clark and India’s Naresh Yadav & C Murugan to pull through to second and third. On the final beat Craig & Clark overhauled A Jackson & Skeens.
Race 5 – Nick led, Naresh second, tide pushing competitors onto windward mark, so several doing turns. Shifty conditions led to changing places on the beats. At the pin end of the line Woodward & Halliwell capsized after hitting the mark. Craig & Clark rounded the windward mark first and maintained this lead to the finish. Yadav & Murugan took second place from the Van Maanens on the second beat.
Race 6 Akshan Jirasinha & Jan Wimaladharma rounded first followed by Poland’s Wojciech Mysliwiec & Ireneusz Kaminski after a general recall on the first start. As the fleet searched for the next mark Craig & Clark bore away to the correct heading and took the lead at the gybe. On the second beat Craig & Clark established their lead, covering the fleet to the finish. Meanwhile Woodward & Halliwell pulled through the fleet to take second place on the second beat. The following run saw the Jackson father & daughter combo move to second place however Woodward & Halliwell reclaimed their position on the next beat. Flor O’Driscoll & Julie Moore sailed into third place.
Race 7 The wind dropped at the start to a force 2 and International Race Officer Jack Roy flew an individual recall flag, however no-one returned to dip the line. A surprise was in store for someone! The Asians showed their form with Naresh Kumar Yadav & C Murugan leading at the windward mark closely followed by Craig & Clark and Jirasinha & Wimaladharma. Over the next lap these three boats had a very tight tussle with Muthu Pushparajan & N Bhaskaran joining in as a result of a tasty left-hand shift up the second beat. A big black cloud came in and provided 25 knots for the last lap, Craig & Clark maintained their lead followed by Yadav & Murugan. Russell Short & Kate Fry had an excellent last lap to take third place after Pushparajan & Bhaskaran capsized at the messy gybe mark. Woodward & Halliwell had a nasty surprise and were OCS to lose second overall for the time being.
Race 8 There was a complete change of wind – shifty, fluky varying 2 -3 – a day when there was definitely a right and wrong way to go up the beat. Nick Craig having collected 7 bullets decided to take a ‘rest day’ – the remainder of the fleet competed with Ind 9 Muthu Pushparajan/N Bhaskaran claiming 1st, followed by 22932 IRL Richard Graves/Lorcan Pratt, 3rd 23089 GBR Jon Woodward/Alex Halliwell. Jon and Alex took a well deserved 2nd overall in the world championship followed by 3rd Ind 5 Naresh Kumar Yadav/C Murgan a popular competitor from India and 4th GBR 23219 Russel Short/Kate Fry. The Royal Irish Yacht Club hosted a very pleasurable Prize Giving in their very elegant establishment in Dun Laoghaire.
- Nick Craig (GBR) reigned supreme - the outright winner of the enterprise worlds - 7 bullets – an outstanding skilled performance
- Akshan Jirasinha (SRI ) retains his youth world title
- Naresh Vadav (IND) wins the master award
- Ann Jackson (GBR) lady helm world champion
Congratulations to all!
