Eastern Area Championship 2008

Richie and Sallis win

13 visitors joined 3 locals for two days of championship racing. Race Officer, Bob Fletcher, managed four Olympic course races over the two days.

Saturday’s racing started in F2-3 freshening to F3-4, Andy Ritchie won both races with healthy leads over the second placed Brian Cummings. The middle fleet was so close that in hour long races only seconds separate 4 or 5 boats!

Andy Ritchie didn’t get it all his own way on Sunday and the first race went to Andy Bayliss with Graham Kirkup in second, and Ritchie third. The middle fleet was very close with many places changing several times during the race, right up to the finishing line.

The last race started in a good F4 but quickly rose to F5 on the second beat. Andy Ritchie capsized after the first lap as a sudden gust caught him napping and he retired. Jonti Mason was next whereupon others retired leaving eight boats on the last beat. The race was won by Graham Kirkup with Andy Bayliss in second place having gybed inside Steve Chapman as he tacked at the last gybe mark.

Overall first place went to Andy Ritchie and Joanne Sallis, in second place was Andy Bayliss and Vicky Woods, third was Graham Kirkup and Dominic White and fourth place was Brian and Lynda Cummings. Special mention for Iain Leiper, 13 yrs old, crewing for Paul Young as it was his first time racing on the sea.
